HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Le Mans Cathedral (Saint-Julien).

The Cathedral of Saint-Julien preserves its Romanesque nave, its soaring Gothic choir with flying buttresses, and an extensive collection of medieval stained glass. As with most French cathedrals, it is classified as a monument historique, owned by the state, and used by the Catholic Diocese of Le Mans for worship. It remains an active place of worship that is freely open to visitors.

About Le Mans Cathedral (Saint-Julien)

Le Mans Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Julien, was built over several centuries, from an eleventh century Romanesque nave to a soaring Gothic choir completed in the thirteenth century. It served as the seat of the Bishop of Le Mans and a center of the medieval Angevin region. Geoffrey of Anjou, father of King Henry II, was buried there.
