HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Le Castella (Capo Rizzuto).
Le Castella preserves the restored walls, towers, and keep of an Aragonese coastal fortress set on a rocky islet linked to the shore by a causeway. The castle is in state ownership and is managed locally within the Capo Rizzuto marine protected area. It is open to visitors on a ticketed basis.
About Le Castella (Capo Rizzuto)
A fortress was built on this small rocky islet off the Calabrian coast to guard the shoreline near ancient Kroton against seaborne raids. Successive Angevin and Aragonese rulers refortified the site over several centuries as Ottoman and Barbary pirate attacks threatened the coast. It functioned as a coastal watch post and refuge for local fishermen.
