HISTORIC PRESERVATION at León Cathedral & Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro.

The Gothic cathedral of Santa María de León survives largely as built, notable for its extensive medieval stained glass, while the nearby Real Colegiata de San Isidoro preserves its Romanesque church and the frescoed Royal Pantheon holding the tombs of medieval kings of León. Both are administered by the Catholic Church, the cathedral under its diocesan chapter. The cathedral is an active place of worship open to visitors, and the Pantheon is open on a ticketed basis as a museum.

About León Cathedral & Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro

The Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro was built in the eleventh century under King Ferdinand I and Queen Sancha as a royal burial chapel, its ceiling covered with renowned Romanesque frescoes. The adjoining Gothic cathedral of León was begun in the thirteenth century. Together the complex served as a center of monarchy and religious art in medieval León.
