HISTORIC PRESERVATION at L'Aquila Historic Centre.

The historic center preserves its medieval and Baroque street plan, churches, and palazzi, many of which sustained serious earthquake damage and have undergone long-term structural restoration rather than full original survival. It remains under Italian state and municipal heritage protection. The center is a functioning town whose streets are freely accessible, though some individual buildings remain restricted.

About L'Aquila Historic Centre

L'Aquila was founded in the mid-thirteenth century, in 1254, through the union of numerous surrounding castles and villages encouraged by the Holy Roman Empire. The city grew into a center of the wool trade and, in 1294, hosted the coronation of Pope Celestine V, who granted it an indulgence known as the Perdonanza. It became a leading city of medieval Abruzzo.
