HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Laodicea on the Lycus.
The site preserves extensive ruins including a large theater, a stadium, a nymphaeum, a monumental gateway, a colonnaded street, and remains of early Christian churches including a fifth century basilica, with much of the fabric consisting of unrestored ruin fields alongside some stabilized and partially reconstructed structures. It lies within an archaeological park under Turkish state authority through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The site is open to the public as a ticketed archaeological park with marked walking paths among the ruins.
About Laodicea on the Lycus
Laodicea on the Lycus was founded in the mid-third century BCE by the Seleucid king Antiochus II, who named it after his wife Laodice, along a major trade route in Asia Minor. Under Roman rule it grew wealthy through textile production, banking, and trade. It later became one of the seven churches addressed in the Book of Revelation.
