HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Lambaesis (Tazoult).
Substantial ruins survive at Lambaesis, most notably the well-preserved praetorium of the Roman Third Augustan Legion, along with remains of an amphitheater, baths, a triumphal arch, and sections of the fortress walls and barracks. The site is under the care of Algeria's national antiquities and cultural heritage authorities. It exists as an archaeological site with ruins in open ground, open to visitors, though a later prison built within part of the ancient fortress limits access to some areas.
About Lambaesis (Tazoult)
The Roman army established the legionary fortress of Lambaesis, near modern Tazoult in Algeria, in the early second century to base the Third Augustan Legion in Numidia. The fortress grew into a major military and administrative center for Roman North Africa under the reign of Hadrian. A civilian town developed alongside it, later becoming the provincial capital.
