The site preserves ruined stone foundations and outbuildings of the sugar plantation estate, including remains associated with the family home, with the main house itself not surviving intact and the standing structures largely ruinous. It is administered as a museum site under Martinique's regional cultural authorities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About La Pagerie (Empress Joséphine's birthplace)
La Pagerie was an eighteenth-century sugar plantation estate on Martinique, worked by enslaved laborers under French colonial rule. Marie-Josèphe-Rose Tascher de la Pagerie, later known as Empress Joséphine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, was born there in 1763 and spent her childhood on the estate. It illustrated the sugar economy underpinning French Caribbean society.
