HISTORIC PRESERVATION at La Cattolica di Stilo.

The building preserves its original ninth century Byzantine brick fabric, including the five small drum domes, cruciform plan, and fragmentary interior frescoes, largely intact despite its small scale. It is under the custodianship of the Italian Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the local diocese, as a protected national monument. The church is open to visitors on a ticketed or donation basis and is occasionally used for religious services.

About La Cattolica di Stilo

La Cattolica di Stilo was built under Byzantine rule in Calabria, probably in the ninth or tenth century, as a small church for Greek Orthodox worship. Constructed of brick in a Greek-cross plan with five domes, it followed Byzantine rather than Latin architectural models. It exemplified Byzantine religious presence in southern Italy during the early medieval period.
