HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kylemore Abbey.
The site retains the neo-Gothic castle built for Mitchell Henry, a small Gothic replica church, a Victorian walled garden, and a mausoleum, all original nineteenth century fabric rather than reconstruction. It is owned and run by a community of Benedictine nuns known as the Benedictine Community of Kylemore Abbey. The grounds, walled garden, church, and part of the castle's ground floor are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Kylemore Abbey
The estate was built in the 1860s as a private castle for a wealthy English member of parliament and his wife, its design blending Scottish and Gothic Revival styles. In 1920, Benedictine nuns fleeing wartime Belgium acquired it and established an abbey with a girls boarding school. It became a center of religious life, education, and later horticulture in Connemara.
