HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Ksour of Chenini and Ouled Soltane.

The Ksar Ouled Soltane preserves multiple stories of vaulted stone and mudbrick ghorfas, traditional granary cells, arranged around two courtyards, while the nearby Chenini ksour and troglodyte dwellings survive as a mix of inhabited and ruined structures on the hillside. The sites are in the care of Tunisian heritage authorities and local communities. They are open to visitors on a generally freely accessible basis.

About Ksour of Chenini and Ouled Soltane

The ksour of Chenini and Ouled Soltane were fortified granary complexes built by Berber communities in southern Tunisia beginning around the twelfth century. Their tiered stone chambers, known as ghorfas, stored grain and other goods communally, protecting harvests from raiders in this arid, mountainous region. They reflected the cooperative agricultural traditions of Berber tribal society.
