HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Koutoubia Mosque.

The Koutoubia Mosque preserves its twelfth-century minaret, built of red sandstone with decorative bands and finials, along with the mosque's prayer hall and adjacent gardens, while ruins of an earlier, misaligned mosque foundation remain visible beside it. The mosque is administered by Morocco's Ministry of Islamic Affairs and remains an active place of worship. The minaret and gardens can be viewed from outside, but the prayer hall itself is open only to Muslims.

About Koutoubia Mosque

Built by the Almohad caliphs in the twelfth century on the site of an earlier mosque, the Koutoubia Mosque served as Marrakesh's principal congregational mosque. Its minaret, over 70 meters tall, inspired the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. The mosque took its name from manuscript and book sellers who once traded nearby.
