Knole retains its sprawling calendar house of seven courtyards, medieval and Tudor stone ranges, and an extensive collection of Stuart furniture, tapestries, and paintings largely assembled by the Sackville family. It is owned by the National Trust, which manages the house and its deer park as a Grade I listed building, while descendants of the Sackville family retain a private apartment within it. The house, gardens, and park are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Knole House, Kent
Thomas Bourchier, Archbishop of Canterbury, built Knole House in the 1450s as an archiepiscopal palace in Kent. Henry VIII took possession of the estate in the 1530s, and Elizabeth I later granted it to Thomas Sackville in 1566. As one of England's largest houses, Knole became a seat of the Sackville family and a showcase of Jacobean interiors.
