HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds.
The abbey preserves extensive roofless ruins of its Cistercian church, cloister, chapter house, and monastic ranges built of local sandstone, standing largely as substantial walls and arcades rather than reconstruction. It is owned by Leeds City Council and is a scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed building. The ruins stand in a public park and are freely accessible as open ground.
About Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds
Kirkstall Abbey was founded in 1152 by Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey, endowed by the baron Henry de Lacy on land beside the River Aire. The abbey supported a self-sufficient monastic community engaged in sheep farming and wool production for centuries. It was dissolved in 1539 during Henry VIII's suppression of the monasteries.
