About King David’s Tomb (traditional site)
This Mount Zion shrine is traditionally called King David’s Tomb. Archaeology has not verified it as the burial place of the biblical King David.
The Israel Antiquities Authority documented conservation and limited excavations in the compound. Its active religious use makes further excavation difficult.
History happened here at King David’s Tomb (traditional site)
The traditional identification of the Mount Zion building as David’s burial place arose roughly a thousand years ago, long after the period associated with David.
The building was substantially modified over generations. Archaeological work has identified Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, medieval and Ottoman phases but has not established the location of David’s remains.
