The site preserves an intact early medieval round tower and the substantially rebuilt St Brigid's Cathedral, which stands largely as a nineteenth century restoration of a medieval church on an ancient monastic site, along with old graveyard monuments. The tower and grounds are in the guardianship of the Office of Public Works, while the cathedral remains an active Church of Ireland parish church. The tower is open on a ticketed, seasonal basis and the cathedral is generally freely accessible.

Tradition holds that Saint Brigid founded a monastic community at Kildare in the late fifth century, which grew into a center of Irish Christianity tended by monks and nuns. Its round tower, built centuries later, served as a bell tower and refuge, while the cathedral occupies a site linked to Brigid's sacred flame. Kildare became a major pilgrimage site.
