HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kelso Abbey.
Kelso Abbey survives only in part, chiefly the massive crossing tower and west end of what was one of the largest Border abbeys, the rest having been lost to war and post Reformation demolition. The ruin is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. It stands freely accessible in open ground, viewable at any time without charge.
About Kelso Abbey
Kelso Abbey was founded in 1128 by Tironensian monks under the patronage of King David I of Scotland, relocating a community first established nearby at Selkirk. It grew into one of the wealthiest and most powerful abbeys in medieval Scotland, holding extensive lands along the border. Its position near the frontier left it repeatedly damaged by border warfare.
