Kekerten Historic Park preserves the remains of a nineteenth century whaling station, including scattered building foundations, try-pot remnants, and artifacts left from the whaling operations, set on an island site accessible only by boat. It is managed as a territorial historic site under the government of Nunavut. Access is generally seasonal and requires arranging transportation to the island.
About Kekerten Historic Park (whaling station)
Kekerten Island was a commercial whaling station established in the mid-nineteenth century as a base for Scottish and American whalers hunting bowhead whales in Cumberland Sound. Inuit workers processed blubber and baleen there alongside European crews. The station was central to a whaling trade that reshaped Inuit economic life in the eastern Arctic until its decline.
