HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kastoria Old Town.
The old town preserves numerous Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, many with original frescoes, alongside a large stock of Ottoman-era stone mansions with timber upper stories overlooking Lake Orestiada, with most structures being original fabric rather than reconstruction. The churches and listed mansions fall under the protection of the Greek Ministry of Culture together with the local municipality. The old town is freely accessible as a living neighborhood, though individual churches and mansions keep varying access.
About Kastoria Old Town
Kastoria developed around a Byzantine fortress that Emperor Justinian I is said to have rebuilt in the sixth century on a peninsula in Lake Orestiada. The town grew into a center of Byzantine church building and, later, of the fur trade. Wealthy fur merchants funded churches and mansions, making Kastoria a center of Byzantine and Ottoman-era art.
