HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kastellorizo Old Town.
The old town preserves rows of colorful neoclassical houses along its harbor along with the ruined hilltop Castle of the Knights, though many buildings were damaged or destroyed by wartime bombing and mid-twentieth-century depopulation and only partly rebuilt. The island and its monuments fall under the Greek Ministry of Culture and the local municipality. Public access is open and freely accessible, with the castle ruins standing in open ground above the harbor.
About Kastellorizo Old Town
Kastellorizo, the easternmost Greek island, was inhabited from prehistoric times and its old town grew around a harbor beneath a medieval castle later held by the Knights of St John. Under Ottoman and then Italian rule it became a prosperous trading and sponge-diving port. Its strategic position off the Anatolian coast made it a hub of Aegean maritime commerce.
