HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Kasbah of the Udayas & Chellah Necropolis.

The Kasbah of the Udayas preserves its fortified ramparts, gate, and an old residential quarter along with an Andalusian garden, while the Chellah necropolis retains the ruins of a Marinid walled complex built over an earlier Roman settlement, including a minaret, mosque ruins, and royal tombs. Both sites fall under Morocco's Ministry of Culture, and they form part of the Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City World Heritage Site. Both are open to the public, the kasbah as a freely accessible quarter and garden and the Chellah on a ticketed basis as an archaeological site.

About Kasbah of the Udayas & Chellah Necropolis

This site combines the Kasbah of the Udayas, an Almohad fortress built in the twelfth century above the Bou Regreg River, with Chellah, an ancient trading settlement founded by the Phoenicians and later held by Rome. Chellah was later converted into a royal necropolis by the Merinid dynasty. Together they mark Rabat's transition from ancient port to medieval Islamic capital.
