HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jorvik Viking Site (Coppergate), York.
The original excavated remains, including Viking-Age timber building foundations, wattle fences, and thousands of organic and artifact finds, lie beneath the Coppergate shopping development, and the present Jorvik Viking Centre presents reconstructed streets and buildings based on that excavation rather than the original ground itself. The center is operated by the York Archaeological Trust, which conducted the original excavation. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Jorvik Viking Site (Coppergate), York
Norse invaders of the Great Heathen Army captured York in 866 and founded the Viking settlement of Jorvik, which grew into a major trading and craft center in northern England. Excavations at Coppergate uncovered evidence of leatherworking, metalworking, and trade goods reaching as far as the Middle East. Jorvik served as a hub of Scandinavian trade.
