About John William Smith
John William Smith, born in Virginia in 1792, served as a soldier in the army of the Republic of Texas and later as a member of its Congress. He also became the first mayor of San Antonio, holding civic and military roles during the young republic's formative years. He died at Washington, Texas, on January 13, 1845.
