John R. Holland was an early settler in Alpine, in Brewster County, Texas, during the nineteenth century, when ranching and the railroad shaped the town's growth. A street in Alpine was later named for him, reflecting his standing in the community. He belonged to the generation of settlers who helped build Alpine into a ranching center.
