About John and Julia Hill House
J.T. McNair, a prominent landowner and cotton distributor, deeded his daughter Julia a parcel of land in Navasota in 1887. After marrying contractor-builder John Elmore Hill in 1892, the couple built this frame house, with its L-shaped porch and bay window, the following year. The Hills sold the home in 1896 to cotton farmer W.L. Steele and moved away.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at John and Julia Hill House
Prominent landowner and cotton distributor J.T. McNair deeded his daughter Julia (1860-1947) a parcel of land in 1887. In 1892, Julia married contractor-builder John Elmore Hill (1869-1916). The next year, John constructed a frame house with L-shaped porch and west-facing bay window. In 1896, the Hills left Navasota, selling the home to W.L. Steele, a prominent local cotton farmer. After many subsequent owners, renovations were undertaken. The house features many original details, such as the red brick chimney, door ringer, several etched hinges and stained-glass transom windows above and on each side of the main entrance.
