In September 1781, Johannes Dietz and seven members of his family were killed near this place by a party described in local records as Loyalists and Indigenous warriors. The massacre occurred in the violent borderland of the Mohawk and Schoharie valleys, where raids destroyed farms, captured inhabitants, and retaliated for American campaigns against Haudenosaunee communities.
