HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jesuit Mission of San Ignacio Miní.
The red sandstone ruins of the Jesuit mission survive extensively, including the elaborately carved church facade, cloister walls, workshops, and rows of indigenous housing arranged around a central plaza, with much of the settlement reduced to foundations and low walls. It is a World Heritage Site, part of the Jesuit Missions of the Guaranís, and is managed by Argentine national and provincial heritage authorities. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis as an archaeological park.
About Jesuit Mission of San Ignacio Miní
The mission was founded by Jesuit missionaries in the early seventeenth century to evangelize and settle Guaraní communities in the region later known as Misiones. Guaraní laborers built its red sandstone church and surrounding buildings in a Baroque style blending European and indigenous elements. The mission functioned as a self-sufficient community until the Jesuits' expulsion in 1767.
