HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jesuit Mission of Jesús de Tavarangue.
The Jesuit mission preserves substantial red sandstone ruins of the unfinished church, cloisters, workshops, and other mission buildings, standing as roofless ruins rather than reconstructions since the mission was never completed. It is managed by Paraguay's national heritage authorities, and the site is a World Heritage Site together with the nearby Trinidad mission. The ruins are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Jesuit Mission of Jesús de Tavarangue
Jesuit missionaries founded Jesús de Tavarangue in the late seventeenth century as one of the reductions established among the Guaraní people of the region. Construction of its church, begun around 1685, remained unfinished when Spain expelled the Jesuits from its territories in 1767. The mission organized Guaraní communities around agriculture, craft production, and Catholic instruction.
