HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jervaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire.
Substantial ruins survive of the Cistercian abbey church, chapter house, and cloister arcades, built mostly of dressed stone with window tracery still in place, though much of the site remains fragmentary following its dissolution and later stone robbing. Unlike most English monastic ruins, Jervaulx Abbey remains in private ownership rather than being held by a national heritage body, though it is a scheduled ancient monument. The ruins stand in open grounds and are freely accessible to visitors.
About Jervaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire
Jervaulx Abbey was founded in 1156 as a Cistercian monastery in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Monks there developed sheep farming and horse breeding that made the abbey prosperous within the Cistercian economic network. It was suppressed in 1537 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and its last abbot was executed for his part in the Pilgrimage of Grace.
