Jefferson functioned as one of nineteenth-century Texas's most important inland riverports, operating as the westernmost navigable outpost on the Red River system via Big Cypress Bayou and Caddo Lake following the arrival of its first steamboat around 1843-1844. In this role the town served as the primary shipping point for cotton and other agricultural goods produced across a wide swath of northeast Texas, with steamboats carrying cotton downriver to New Orleans markets and returning with manufactured goods, furniture, and supplies that stocked the region's homes and stores. At its commercial peak around 1870-1872, Jefferson functioned as the busiest inland port in Texas, ranking second only to Galveston in trade volume, with tens of thousands of bales of cotton shipped annually and a population approaching 7,000, supported by hotels, warehouses, and mercantile houses serving the steamboat trade. This riverport function collapsed rapidly after 1873, when the natural logjam known as the Great Raft was cleared from the Red River, lowering water levels and impairing navigation, and when the Texas and Pacific Railway bypassed Jefferson in favor of Marshall, redirecting commerce onto rail lines. Unable to adapt its river-trade economy to rail transport, Jefferson's population and commercial activity declined sharply over subsequent decades. Today Jefferson functions primarily as a well-preserved historic tourism town, its 47-block historic district and dozens of National Register structures, including antebellum hotels and homes, drawing visitors for heritage tourism, seasonal pilgrimages, and reenactments rather than commerce or shipping.
