HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement.
Jarlshof preserves an unusually complete sequence of stone-built remains spanning the Neolithic through the Norse and medieval periods, including a Bronze Age smithy, Iron Age wheelhouses and a broch, Norse longhouses, and the shell of a sixteenth-century laird's house, all exposed as excavated ruins. It is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. The site is open to visitors on a seasonal, ticketed basis.
About Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement
People occupied the site of Jarlshof in Shetland from the Bronze Age onward, and successive communities built wheelhouses, brochs, and other structures over thousands of years. Norse settlers arrived around the ninth century and built longhouses that remained in use into the medieval period. The site illustrated a long and continuous sequence of North Atlantic settlement.
