About Jared Ellison Groce
Jared Ellison Groce, an early Anglo-American colonist, built this home in 1833 as his residence, known as Groce's Retreat. Groce, a large-scale cotton planter, died here on November 20, 1836. After the house was later torn down, its name persisted in a nearby post office and village.

Site of the home built in 1833 by Jared Ellison Groce (1782-1836) Generally known as "Groce's Retreat." Here he died November 20, 1836.
