HISTORIC PRESERVATION at James Fort & Ussher Fort.
The two forts retain their original stone bastions and curtain walls, with James Fort's lighthouse and Ussher Fort's courtyard buildings surviving, though both were long adapted for use as prisons. They are associated with the group of Ghanaian coastal forts recognized as a World Heritage Site and fall under the custodianship of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. Public access has historically been restricted given their use as detention facilities, with visits generally requiring guided arrangement.
About James Fort & Ussher Fort
James Fort and Ussher Fort were built along the Gold Coast in the seventeenth century by English and Dutch traders as fortified posts for the Atlantic trade, including enslaved people. Ussher Fort began as the Dutch Fort Crevecoeur before passing to Britain in 1868. Both forts later served as colonial prisons before Ghanaian independence.
