Pioneering rancher Charles Goodnight established the JA Ranch in Palo Duro Canyon in 1876, just two years after Ranald Mackenzie's cavalry drove the last Comanche and Kiowa bands from the canyon, partnering with Irish financier John Adair to build one of the most influential cattle operations in Texas Panhandle history.
