About Izamal
Izamal was a major Maya city in the Yucatán, known for large pyramid temples such as Kinich Kakmo built in the pre-Columbian era. In the sixteenth century Spanish Franciscans built a convent atop one of its pyramids, using stones from the demolished structure. The convent symbolized the imposition of colonial Catholic authority over Maya religious life.
