The chapel occupies two joined Nissen huts fitted with a concrete facade and interior murals and trompe l'oeil decoration painted by Italian prisoners of war, all of which survive intact. It is a listed building maintained by a local preservation committee rather than a government agency. The chapel remains a place of worship and is freely open to visitors.
About Italian Chapel
Italian prisoners of war held at Camp 60 on Lamb Holm built this chapel from two Nissen huts while working on the Churchill Barriers during the Second World War. Prisoner Domenico Chiocchetti led the elaborate painted decoration of the interior, completed around 1944. The chapel stands as a testament to the prisoners' faith and craftsmanship amid captivity.
