About Humphris-Humphreys House
The Humphris-Humphreys House in Marfa, Texas, was built in 1883 by local builder Saturnino Naborette for rancher and merchant John Humphris and his wife Mary, with a central hallway flanked by four rooms. In 1915 the house was purchased by schoolteacher Sally Humphreys, who operated it as a boardinghouse until 1937. The house illustrates the mixed domestic and commercial uses of homes in early west Texas.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Humphris-Humphreys House
This was the home of rancher, merchant and community leader John Humphris and his wife Mary. Built in 1883 by local builder Saturnino Naborette, the house represents traditional building methods of early pioneer days in west Texas, with a central hallway with four rooms on either side. The house was purchased in 1915 by schoolteacher Sally Humphreys, wife of rancher Joe Humphreys, who ran a boardinghouse here until 1937.
