The site preserves the wooden company town structures, industrial saltpeter processing plant, workers housing, theater, and swimming pool of the two former nitrate mining settlements, standing largely as abandoned original fabric exposed to desert conditions rather than restored. It is a World Heritage Site under Chilean state heritage protection, with a corporation overseeing conservation. Access is on a ticketed, guided basis due to the fragile condition of the structures.
About Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works
Founded in the 1870s as a saltpeter works in Chile's Atacama Desert, the site processed caliche ore into sodium nitrate fertilizer for export. It grew into a company town with worker housing, a theater, and a market, employing migrant laborers under harsh conditions. It became emblematic of Chile's nitrate era before its industry was made obsolete.
