HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Huaca de la Luna & Huaca del Sol.

Huaca de la Luna retains extensive original adobe brick platforms and polychrome relief murals depicting Moche deities, while Huaca del Sol, once the larger of the two pyramids, survives only in an eroded and partially truncated form. Both are managed by Peru's Ministry of Culture through the Huacas de Moche archaeological project. Huaca de la Luna is open to the public on guided, ticketed visits, while Huaca del Sol is generally not open for entry.

About Huaca de la Luna & Huaca del Sol

Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol were adobe pyramids built by the Moche civilization near Trujillo, Peru, beginning around the first century CE as religious and administrative centers. Huaca de la Luna was rebuilt in successive layers over generations and yielded evidence of ritual sacrifice. The complex anchored Moche political and religious life on Peru's north coast.
