About Houston-Lea Family Cemetery
Margaret Lea Houston, widow of Sam Houston, died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1867, and contagion fears prevented her burial beside him in Huntsville. She was buried near her home, beside her mother, Nancy Lea, and the church both had attended. The cemetery reflected ties between the Houston and Lea families and the community of Independence.

When the widow of Sam Houston died of yellow fever during the epidemic of 1867, the danger of contagion made it impossible to carry her to Huntsville for burial beside her husband.
