Allen's Landing functioned as Houston's original port and turning basin at the head of navigation on Buffalo Bayou, the point where the Allen brothers established the city in August 1836 specifically because oceangoing and river vessels could go no farther upstream. In its early decades the landing operated as the working commercial wharf of the young city, receiving steamboats, flatboats, and barges loaded with cotton, timber, and manufactured goods, and it was formally recognized as a port of entry in the early 1840s. As Houston's shipping activity later shifted downstream toward the Houston Ship Channel and Turning Basin, Allen's Landing's role as an active cargo port declined, though the site briefly took on a very different civic function in the late 1960s and 1970s as home to a nightclub and music venue along the bayou. Following a major revitalization completed in the early 2000s, the site today functions as a small downtown park and public green space, with a rebuilt concrete wharf, walking paths, and river access. It now serves primarily as a recreational and commemorative space: a put-in and take-out point for kayakers and canoeists on Buffalo Bayou, the staging ground for the annual Houston Dragon Boat Festival, and a gathering spot for civic and historical events marking the city's founding, rather than as a working transportation or trade facility.
