During the British occupation of Newport from 1776 to 1779, Rhode Island communities maintained warning systems against amphibious raids. When vessels or troops threatened the mainland, sentries lit beacon fires visible from neighboring towns. Each signal summoned militia companies to gather with weapons and move toward likely landing places. Such alarms could be false or brief, but they repeatedly disrupted farming and family life.
