HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Honfleur Old Port.

Honfleur's old port preserves the Vieux Bassin harbor basin lined with tall, slate-fronted merchant houses, the wooden church of Sainte-Catherine with its separate freestanding bell tower, and the Lieutenance gate structure at the harbor mouth. The town and its historic monuments are owned and maintained by the municipality of Honfleur, with several buildings classified as monuments historiques. The old port and its streets are freely open and accessible to the public at all times.

About Honfleur Old Port

Honfleur developed as a fortified harbor town in the twelfth century and became a major point of departure for transatlantic voyages, including Samuel de Champlain's 1608 expedition that founded Quebec. Local shipwrights built the wooden Sainte-Catherine church using boatbuilding techniques. In the nineteenth century, the port's light attracted painters such as Eugène Boudin.
