Carter Braxton lived at West Point from 1777 to 1786 after fire destroyed Chericoke, his plantation upriver on the Pamunkey. Braxton had signed the Declaration of Independence and used extensive mercantile connections to obtain and channel goods for Patriot forces. Wartime shipping risks, inflation, debts, and losses damaged his fortune. From this town, situated where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey form the York River, he remained connected to trade and military supply.
