HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site.
The site preserves the nineteenth century plantation house and several outbuildings of a former rice and dairy plantation, retained largely as original structures handed down within the same family before their donation to the state. It is managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a state historic site. The house is open to the public only by guided tour, with the grounds otherwise accessible.
About Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site
Hofwyl-Broadfield was established in the early nineteenth century as a rice plantation along the Altamaha River delta near Brunswick, Georgia, worked by enslaved laborers on tidal rice fields. The Brailsford and Dent families who owned it later shifted to dairy farming after rice cultivation declined. It reflected the shift from slave-based rice growing to smaller-scale farming.
