About the Yugoslav Wars

The Yugoslav Wars (1991–2001) were a series of conflicts accompanying the breakup of Yugoslavia and struggles over statehood, territory, and political power. They included wars in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo, followed by related insurgencies elsewhere in the former federation. The conflicts involved ethnic cleansing, mass displacement, and international military intervention.

Geography of the Yugoslav Wars

The wars took place in the western Balkans within the territory of the former Yugoslavia. Fighting moved from Slovenia and Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina, including Sarajevo and Srebrenica, and later to Kosovo, southern Serbia, and present-day North Macedonia. Mountain ranges, river valleys, urban neighborhoods, and mixed settlement patterns shaped front lines and sieges. NATO's 1999 air campaign also struck targets across Serbia and Montenegro beyond the main ground fighting in Kosovo.
