About the War of the Spanish Succession

The War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) was fought over who would inherit Spain's monarchy and empire after the death of Charles II. France supported a Bourbon claimant, while a coalition backed a Habsburg rival and sought to prevent excessive French power. The settlements recognized Philip V as king of Spain while separating the French and Spanish crowns and redistributing major territories.

Geography of the War of the Spanish Succession

The main European theaters included the Spanish Netherlands, southern Germany, northern Italy, and the Iberian Peninsula. Battles and sieges at places such as Blenheim, Ramillies, Turin, and Barcelona reflected the war's wide reach. Naval campaigns contested Mediterranean positions, while related colonial fighting occurred in North America and the Caribbean. Fortified borders, river routes, Alpine passages, and access to ports connected the continental struggle with overseas empire.
