About the Vietnam War
The conflicts in Vietnam from 1946 to 1975 included the First Indochina War against French colonial rule and the later war between communist-led North Vietnam and South Vietnam, backed by the United States. These linked struggles combined decolonization, civil conflict, and Cold War intervention. The fall of Saigon in 1975 ended the war and paved the way for Vietnam's reunification under communist rule.
Geography of the Vietnam War
The wars were fought throughout Vietnam, including the northern Red River region, the central highlands, the coastal plains, and the southern Mekong Delta. Major locations included Điện Biên Phủ, Hanoi, Huế, and Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. Fighting and bombing also extended into Laos and Cambodia, especially along supply routes collectively known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Mountains, dense vegetation, waterways, and monsoon weather influenced both conventional campaigns and guerrilla operations.
