About the Russian Revolution & Civil War
The Russian Revolution and Civil War (1917–1923) encompassed the overthrow of the monarchy, the Bolshevik seizure of power, and the struggle to control the former Russian Empire. Bolshevik Red forces defeated their main White opponents amid foreign intervention, peasant uprisings, and competing national movements, establishing Soviet rule over much of the former empire.
Geography of the Russian Revolution & Civil War
The revolutions began in Petrograd, now Saint Petersburg, while Moscow became a central seat of Bolshevik power. Civil war spread across European Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, the Volga region, Siberia, Central Asia, and the Russian Far East. Foreign forces intervened at ports including Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, and Vladivostok. Vast distances, railway corridors, major rivers, and harsh seasonal conditions strongly influenced the movement and supply of armies.
