About the Korean War

The Korean War (1950–1953) began when North Korea invaded South Korea and developed into a major Cold War conflict. United Nations forces led by the United States supported the South, while China intervened for the North and the Soviet Union provided support. An armistice halted the fighting near the original division of the peninsula without a final peace settlement.

Geography of the Korean War

The war was fought across the Korean Peninsula, from the southeastern perimeter around Busan to northern areas near the Yalu River and the Chinese border. Seoul repeatedly changed hands, while the landing at Incheon helped reverse the early North Korean advance. After major movements north and south, fighting concentrated along a fortified front near the 38th parallel. Mountains, narrow valleys, severe winters, and coastal access shaped both ground campaigns and naval operations.
