About the Italian Wars
The Italian Wars (1494–1559) were a series of conflicts in which France, the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs, and Italian states competed for territory and influence in Italy. Changing alliances drew much of Europe into the struggle, which ended with the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis and strengthened Spanish dominance over major parts of the peninsula.
Geography of the Italian Wars
Most campaigns took place in the Italian peninsula, especially Lombardy, the Po Valley, Tuscany, the Papal States, and the Kingdom of Naples. Milan and Naples were major prizes, while cities such as Pavia became decisive battle sites. Fighting also extended to France, the Low Countries, and Mediterranean waters as the rivalry widened. Alpine passes, broad northern plains, fortified towns, and coastal supply routes shaped the movement of multinational armies.
